Protection Magic: 3 Spells to Counteract Negative Energy

As we discussed in our previous blog, PROTECTION MAGIC: WARDING AGAINST INVISIBLE FORCES, warding magic or protection magic has been in practice since ancient times. With its roots in Mesopotamia, warding magic has served to counteract the evil eye, witchcraft, bad luck illness, and a variety of other misfortunes. Through the use of rituals, amulets, prayers, and incantations, almost all cultures have developed their own unique methodology and cultural practices.

Although there are countless approaches to warding magic, we have included three popular protection spells that are easy to perform and don’t require elaborate ingredients and or rituals.

Protection Spells

How to Make a Witches Bottle

The witches bottle is not to be confused with a conjure bottle. The primary purpose of the witches bottle is to protect the home from a witch’s influence. We certainly know these were in use as far back as the 15th century, and they continue to be an easy and effective way to inhibit a negative force from entering the home. This could be a particular person or simply negative energy in general.

What you need:

  • A Jar with a closure.
  • Vinegar or Urine
  • 3 Nails
  • A Pinch of Salt
  • A Pinch of Cayenne Pepper or Black Pepper
  • A pinch of St. John’s Wort, Angelica Root, or Rue
  • A black chime candle

To begin, take your urine or vinegar and bring it to a boil. When cool, add it to the jar. Add a pinch of salt, pepper, and herbs. Take your 3 nails and place them in the jar with the tips facing downwards towards the bottom of the jar. Cover the jar. The bottle is now prepared. You will now charge the jar by doing the following exercise over the course of 9 nights.

Find the time to work your ritual for 15 minutes daily. When ready, light your black chime candle and state your intention. Let it burn for 15 minutes. Repeat this for a total of 9 nights. I recommend performing the ritual consistently at the same time as you did the previous day. For example, if you charge the bottle at 9 p.m., I would try to charge it at the same time each day. When this exercise complete, store your jar in a well-hidden area of the home.

How to Make Protection From Evil Oil

There are numerous recipes from Protection Oil. The one mentioned below is a simple but very effective one. We do carry our own Protection from Evil Oil. Our’s includes agrimony, myrrh, angelica, and many other herbs and essential oils. However, you can make your own version by using easy-to-get herbs that you can find in any health food grocery store.

You will need the following:

  • A 1 oz jar with a cap.
  • A small rusty nail or iron fillings (optional)
  • Blessed Thistle
  • Basil
  • Nettle
  • Black peppercorns
  • Rosemary
  • Olive or Almond Oil

Add your herbs and gently grind them down. Place 2 pinches of the herbs into your jar. If you are using a rusty nail or iron fillings, add these to the jar. Next, take 3-4 tablespoons of your oil and cover all the ingredients. Close your jar and shake well. Store it in a cool dark place for a minimum of 4 weeks. It should be lightly shaken each day. If using a rusty nail, the oil will become slightly discolored. After four weeks have passed, your oil is now properly infused. Use this oil to anoint all windows and entrances to your home. If you are feeling particularly vulnerable, anoint it on a black candle in the center of your home and say a prayer.

How to Make A Protection Witch's Ladder

The witch’s ladder is an old-school magical practice that can be used for a variety of purposes. The witch’s ladder is a type of knot magic that utilizes cords and other magical ingredients which is determined by the intention of the practitioner. Common materials include feathers, hag stone (stone with holes in them), herbs, hair, branches, amber beads, etc. For protection purposes, sprigs of herbs and trees can be an effective means for warding negative energy.

You will need the following:

  • An 18-inch piece of cord, ribbon, or string
  • 9 Sprigs of Rosemary
  • A small bell and protection oil (optional)

To begin, gather your materials together. Starting at one side of the string, tie a knot around the sprig of rosemary. As you do this repeat the following charm, “In home and hearth, no shall harm come to me. In body, mind & Spirit.”  Then move up the string about an inch and a half and tie another know and repeat the charm. Do this a total of 9 times. When you have completed all nine knots take the string and hang it over your front door. For further protection, you can attach the witch’s ladder to a bell anointed with Fiery Wall of Protection or Protection from Evil Oil.
